The LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY) recognized and honored Amber Van Horn and Payton Ward as LCAHY’s 2023-2024 Outstanding Senior Service Award Recipients during LCAHY’s annual youth coalition recognition event. LCAHY’s Outstanding Senior Service Award Committee Member and long-time community board member, Lieutenant Craig Washington, presented Amber and Payton with an Award of Excellence for their significant contributions to the Lowcountry Alliance for Healthy Youth and their youth coalition, Teens for Healthy Youth. Lt. Washington recognized Payton Ward for serving as President of THY at Cross Schools and Amber Van Horn as co-President at Bluffton High, their involvement in community events, and as being role models to their peers. During the evening, Dr. Loretta Novince, LCAHY/THY’s Consultant and summer intern preceptor, highlighted Amber’s, and Payton’s summer internship projects. Dr. Novice shared Amber’s personal passion for helping youth that experienced grief that led her to develop a fact card for teens and their caregivers on how to cope with grief. Dr. Novince also highlighted the grief resources Amber gathered to share on LCAHY’s website. See mental health resource page with resources for youth experiencing grief here. In addition to that, Amber Van Horn was recognized for her work developing THY’s 2023-2024 recruitment video. Dr. Novice expressed Payton’s personal passion for addressing cyberbullying among youth. Payton Ward developed a fact card on cyberbullying and served as a contributor to the Bluffton/Hilton Sun Newspaper for her article “Don’t Condone Bullying”. See fact card and article below. LCAHY’s Outstanding Seniors will receive a monetary award in the amount of $1,000. Recognizing youth that make significant contributions to LCAHY and THY is an activity in LCAHY’s 12-month Strategic Action Plan under Strategy 5-Incentives/Disincentives within the Seven Strategies of Community Level Change.
