The LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY) and Teens for Healthy Youth (THY) participated in the Bluffton Police Department’s National Night Out Event. LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth Board members used this community event as an opportunity to educate the community during October National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month. LCAHY Board members informed the community on how to properly dispose of prescription medicine and provided LCAHY’s medicine dropbox location card. THY members face painted children and meanwhile gave each parent LCAHY’s tip card for checking prescription medication. THY also gave out Scholastic’s family medicine plan in English and Spanish. THY distributed around 70 tip cards during the night and LCAHY distributed around 50 dropbox location cards. The coalition also used this as an opportunity to create awareness for LCAHY and THY and distributed LCAHY and THY brochures. The THY brochure was provided in English and Spanish. LCAHY and THY plan to participate in this event annually because it has been an effective way to educate the community during National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month.
