Teens for Healthy Youth (THY)Cross Schools recently hosted a powerful and impactful DUI Experience and Prom Promise event for the juniors and seniors, reinforcing the importance of making safe and healthy choices, especially during milestone events like prom.
In partnership with Nexxus Care of Beaufort County, approximately 60 students participated in an interactive, hands-on DUI simulation. Using “drunk goggles” to replicate the effects of alcohol impairment, students attempted everyday tasks such as reaching for/grabbing a pencil, catching and throwing a ball, shooting basketballs, and writing. These activities quickly revealed how simple actions become significantly more difficult under the influence of alcohol.
In addition to the simulation, students received important education on South Carolina laws related to alcohol, THC, and tobacco, along with the serious legal consequences of violating those laws. A particularly meaningful component of the event was hearing from a Deputy Coroner, who spoke candidly about his role and the real-life tragedies he witnesses because of impaired and risky behaviors.
To conclude the event, THY members invited students to take part in a Prom Promise, encouraging them to commit to making safe, responsible decisions on prom night and beyond. Many students expressed how impactful the experience was, sharing that it opened their eyes and motivated them to think more carefully about their actions.
This event exemplified the power of peer-led initiatives and community partnerships. Through education, real-world insight, and interactive learning, THY successfully empowered students to prioritize safety and make positive choices; helping to create a safer, healthier school community and safer local community. Educating on the risks of teen use of alcohol is an activity in LCAHY’s 12 Month Action Plan Under Strategy Providing Information.
