Teens for Healthy Youth Assist at the American Suicide Prevention Walk November 2023
Teens for Healthy Youth (THY) assisted at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of Darkness Walk held at the Bluffton Oyster Factory, Bluffton, SC on November 6, 2023. Teens for Healthy Youth are aware that teen stress, depression, and anxiety have increased since COVID-19 which can lead to unhealthy coping behaviors such as substance use or suicide. A member from Bluffton High School THY and the THY Advisor at Hilton Head Island High School staffed an informational table where they distributed the THY Suicide Prevention Fact Card for Teens, the THY Teen Stress Fact Card, and informational brochures on LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth and its youth coalition, Teens for Healthy Youth. THY volunteers from Hilton Head Christian Academy also checked in and registered walkers, sold t-shirts, passed out honor beads, and distributed water to the walkers. Around a hundred people participated in the walk. Through listening to and learning from the experiences of survivors, THY members are better equipped to share the AFSP’s message that suicide can be preventable, and that no one is alone.
