During the March Board meeting, Dillon Haraburd, a representative from Island Security, presented to the LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY). Dillon provided a brief history of Island Security, noting that it was established in 2019 to help local bar and club owners keep businesses safe and accessible. Island Security is hired by local businesses, such as schools, plantations, law firms, and more, to keep the community safe and reduce crime. Dillon said a major issue Island Security is seeing is fake ID use by minors. To counter this problem, Island Security developed an initiative called “Reducing Alcohol Access to Minors” or RAAM. Island Security is also proposing a city-wide ordinance requiring establishments to have machines to check IDs and two security representatives, highly trained to detect fake IDs, to monitor patrons after 9 PM. This would benefit the community by reducing establishment liability for underage drinking and stopping underage drinking. To view the presentation, click here. LCAHY and Island Security plan to work together to limit access to minors. With a shortage of local law enforcement, LCAHY may work with Island Security to conduct scans at local hotspots. Reducing youth access to alcohol is under Strategy 4, Reduce Access, in LCAHY’s 12-Month Action Plan to create community wide change.
