Teens for Healthy Youth at Hilton Head Christian Academy set up “Healthy Alternatives Booths” for National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week during school lunches. These booths were manned by HHCA THY members during middle school lunch periods. Members had numbered wheels set up where middle students could spin the wheel to answer a numbered question about the dangers and side effects of drug and alcohol use, along with questions about healthy alternatives to substance abuse. If the students answered correctly, they won various prizes (mini basketballs or footballs, DIY kids for making bracelets, or fidget toys). This event engaged and interested the student body. This served as an awareness campaign, and additionally, it was a great conversation starter between students and THY members about what our THY is all about. Several middle school students were recruited for next year. About 100 students participated in the healthy booth alternative. Educating on the dangers and risks of teen use of drugs is an activity in LCAHY’s 12-Month Action Plan Under Strategy 1 Providing Information.
HHCA THY talked to middle schoolers about risks of substance use during school lunches.
The event also provided an opportunity for THY to create an awareness about THY and to recruit rising 8th graders to the high school program.
