LCAHY Server/Seller Training for “Coastal Restaurants & Bars of HHI” • 06/18/2019 & 06/19/2019

Tuesday June 18th and Wednesday June 19th, 2019

The LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY) provided the PREP (Palmetto Retailers Education Program) training to 170 employees of nine restaurants of the “Coastal Restaurants & Bars” Group of Hilton Head. The training was held at Aunt Chilada’s Easy Street Cafe Restaurant in Hilton Head and led by LCAHY board member, Wade Bishop, who is the Director of Prevention Services for the Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Department and co-led by Katie Godowns, Prevention Specialist with BCADAD. Both Wade & Katie are certified PREP trainers for S.C. David Martin, LCAHY Board member, local businessman, and owner of the Coligny Plaza Piggly Wiggly Market, coordinated the 2 classes on 6/18 & 6/19 and recruited LCAHY members to assist in the grading of the PREP post-tests. The goal of the training was to help individuals who serve alcohol recognize fake IDs and know the laws and liability regarding serving alcohol, especially serving to minors. The state provides for potential discounts on business’s liability insurance when employees complete the training. This is especially important during the tourist season in Hilton Head Island because alcohol sales at these restaurants peak and teen use of alcohol increases during the summer. People who participated in the training took a PREP test with thirty-five questions. To pass, participants needed to answer 27 or more questions correctly, which assures them certification for a 2-year period. Not one person earned below a 30 on the exam. The “Coastal Group” of Hilton Head requires these individuals to take and pass the test for maintaining employment. The “Coastal Group” plans to do this training every two years. In the fall, the “Serg Restaurant Group” plans to incorporate this training into their requirements for employees and the Coligny Plaza restaurants plan to train their employees in PREP this fall.
