LCAHY Outstanding Senior Recognition Award
Monday May 20th, 2019
Two seniors of Bluffton High School, Grey Anne Cummings and Melida Molina, were recognized by LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY) as the recipients of the LCAHY Outstanding Senior Recognition Award. These seniors demonstrated dedication to promoting positive teen health in their school and community through their service and leadership to LCAHY and LCAHY’s youth coalition,
Teens for Health Youth (THY). THY is dedicated to promoting positive teen health. These youth served the LCAHY Board in many capacities such as by attending LCAHY board meetings, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America trainings, speaking annually at LCAHY community forums, and represented LCAHY well during multiple interviews by local news media. These teens were also leaders in Teens for Healthy Youth in their schools and engaged in peer to peer education. These teens taught National Drug Fact Trivia to their peers and middle school children, created awareness for National Prevention Week at their schools, and participated in National Kick Butt’s Day, among many other projects. The youth were active in the community as they collaborated with the Town of Bluffton to promote Lutzie43 (a program to discourage distracted driving), educated on proper medication disposal during Bluffton Police Department’s National Night Out community event, and promoted a Holiday Campaign to discourage Drunk, Drugged, and Distracted Driving at a local outlet mall. These teens raised money for victims of childhood cancer through CURE and collected donations for the Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Harvey. The passion, effort, and contributions of Grey Anne and Melida in uniting the community to promoting positive teen health is significant and LCAHY is proud to provide them an award to be used for their higher-level education program next fall. LCAHY started the annual recognition program last year and intends to award deserving seniors annually. LCAHY is a recipient of the Drug Free Communities Grant.
